Diyarbakır is known for its dark basalt city walls, which wrap around the historic Sur district, and for the Hevsel Gardens sloping down to the Tigris. The ten-arched Dicle Bridge just south of town is a popular evening spot. Around the old centre, the city has expanded into newer residential districts such as Kayapınar, Bağlar and Yenişehir, where wide boulevards, shopping centres and apartment complexes host much of the population. Summers are hot and dry, so many people prefer to go out after sunset.
Inside the walls, narrow lanes can be hard to navigate by car, and parking is easier on the main avenues just outside the gates. Residents of the western housing areas often find an open pharmacy quicker in Kayapınar, while Bağlar and Yenişehir cover the neighbourhoods closer to the centre.
