Manisa lies just northeast of İzmir, separated from it by the Sabuncubeli pass and tunnel, at the foot of Spil Mountain, whose national park overlooks the city. The provincial centre is divided between Şehzadeler and Yunusemre, and the city is known for its spring Mesir festival, when spiced paste is thrown from the Sultan Mosque. Beyond the centre, the province takes in large farm towns such as Akhisar, famous for olives, along with Salihli and Turgutlu on the road east.
Distances between the province's towns are considerable, so it makes sense to search for the district you are actually in. Residents of the newer neighbourhoods can begin with Yunusemre; those in the north will find the rota in Akhisar more useful, and travellers on the Uşak road can look at Salihli.
