Challenge the Sun

As Happ Health and Maruderm, we held an unforgettable event hosted by Yağmur Kalyoncu against the unique backdrop of Aija Hotel. Together with specialist Dermatologist Dr. Ebru İkizler and Dietitian Serkan Aksoy, we discussed in depth sun protection and healthy nutrition during the summer months. We challenged the sun by experiencing the pleasure of a boat and pedal boat ride on the Bosphorus and trying Maruderm sunscreens. We thank Şebnem Dönmez, Ceren Benderlioğlu, Aslıhan Kapanşahin, Merve Sarıtaş, Aret Varyantan, Cihan Nacar, and all our guests for being with us at this special event.

What Should Be Done to Protect Yourself from the Sun?

Sun rays can cause premature skin ageing and dark spots. In addition, long-term exposure is one of the most important factors that increase the risk of skin cancer. Therefore, knowing and applying methods of sun protection is extremely important from both an aesthetic and health perspective.

With simple daily habits, you can minimize the harmful effects of UV rays. Every step—from sunscreen and clothing to staying in the shade and drinking fluids—is an integral part of protecting your skin. Here are the basic methods to apply:

Using Sunscreen

Sunscreens are the skin’s strongest shield against UV rays. Products with SPF 30 or higher should be preferred and applied to the skin 20–30 minutes before going outside. Reapplying the sunscreen at regular intervals is very important to maintain its effectiveness.

Points to consider when using it:

  • SPF selection: At least SPF 30 is recommended for daily use, while SPF 50 is ideal for prolonged outdoor activities.

  • Frequency of application: It should be reapplied after sweating or entering the sea or a pool.

  • Comprehensive use: It should be applied to all exposed areas, including the face, neck, ears, and hands.

Using a Hat and Sunglasses

Using a hat and sunglasses is one of the most practical methods of sun protection. Wide-brimmed hats protect the face and neck from direct sunlight. UV-filter sunglasses protect eye health while helping reduce wrinkles around the eyes.

Benefits of these accessories:

  • Hat: Prevents sunburn by protecting the face, nape, and ears.

  • Sunglasses: Protect the eyes from UV rays and reduce the risk of cataracts.

  • Style and health: Provide a stylish appearance while supporting skin health.

Choosing Appropriate Clothing

One of the effective ways to protect yourself from sun rays is through clothing choices. Lightweight, loose-fitting, long-sleeved clothing protects the skin from direct sunlight. Light-coloured fabrics in particular help you stay cool by reflecting heat.

Things to consider when choosing clothing:

  • UV-protective fabrics: Reduce the risk of skin cancer.

  • Cotton clothing: Prevent skin irritation by reducing perspiration.

  • Long-sleeved choices: Prevent burns by protecting the arms and legs.

Staying in the Shade

It is necessary to avoid direct sun exposure between 10:00 and 16:00, when the sun is at its highest angle. Staying in the shade prevents the skin from being exposed to intense UV radiation. Umbrellas, awnings, or naturally shaded areas are the safest places during this period.

The importance of staying in the shade:

  • Skin health: Reduces the risk of burns and dark spots.

  • Conserving energy: Keeps the body cool and prevents fluid loss.

  • Long-term effect: Slows skin ageing and reduces cancer risk.

Water Intake and Skin Care

Fluid intake is an integral part of sun protection. Drinking at least 2–2.5 litres of water a day helps keep the skin moisturized. Using moisturizing products after sun exposure strengthens the skin barrier and speeds up the recovery process.

Care steps to apply:

  • Drinking water: Supports cell renewal.

  • Using moisturizer: Soothes the skin and increases its elasticity.

  • Products containing aloe vera: Contribute to skin repair after sun exposure.

Sun Protection Is Important All Year Round

Many people consider sun protection important only during the summer months. However, UV rays remain effective throughout all four seasons. Even in winter, long periods spent outdoors can put the skin at risk. You can protect your skin health throughout the year with regular protection methods.

Remember, healthy skin is not only an aesthetic matter but also an indicator of your overall health. With the right habits, you can both protect your skin and improve your quality of life.
